Identifying a Leaky Roof

Identifying a Leaky Roof

It can be difficult to locate the source of a suspected roof leak because water can travel due to slope, but if you follow our steps, you should be able to identify where a leak is coming from.

Step 1: Check Your Interior

Dripping water is usually the first sign of a leaky roof. However, there are a few other indicators you can should look out for:

  • Water spots and water staining on walls and/or ceilings
  • Bulging on ceilings and walls
  • Musty smell either in the whole house or just in specific rooms with no obvious cause

Keep in mind that these spots may not fully align with where the leak actually is.

Step #2: Check the Attic

A thorough attic inspection is imperative to identifying where a leak is originating. Use a flashlight and make a careful trek, keeping an eye out for any standing water, dark marks, mold or mildew on the ceiling, and any obvious signs of water/damage on the rafters and insulation. If you find a patch of mold, you’ve most likely located the spot.

If you think you could have a leak in your roof but do not have an attic, or if you do not own your home, a licensed professional should come out and take a look at your situation to identify any problems.

Step #3: Inspect Insulation in the Attic

It’s easier to identify insulation deterioration than it is wood deterioration, so be sure to take a look at the insulation. Standing water, mold and mildew, or other signs are indicative of nearby leaking. Remember, the slope of the roof can divert water, so the origin may be in a different place than the insulation showing damage.

Step #4: Fake It

If you’re unable to identify the origin of a roof leak in the attic, the next best step is to recreate rainy weather. Have another adult help with this step, and one of you stays in the attic to observe any leaks while the other emulates rain with a sprinkler outside. Do this in chunks in order to get the best results, and be sure to take enough time to let the roof saturate.
